Software Engineering Specialism Modules

Level 5: Object Orientated Programming
In this module, you will further develop your knowledge and skills of software development by learning about Object Orientated Programming; that is how to design, develop and test these types of applications as well as learn associated good practice. Your knowledge, skills and behaviours will be evidenced through the development of a server-based application.

Level 5: Agile Software Development
In this module, you will develop your knowledge and skills of software development by learning about current front end web development; how to design, develop and test front-end web applications as well as learn associated good practice. Your knowledge, skills and behaviours will be evidenced through the development of a web application that communicates with an Application Programmable Interface (API).

Level 6: Creating Mobile Applications
In this module, you will learn and practice the principles and application of native mobile application development.  You will also use industry-standard methods, tools, and frameworks to develop these applications.

Level 6: Enterprise Application Development
In this module, you will learn and practice the theory and principles of enterprise development.  You will also use industry-standard methods, tools, and frameworks to develop server-side web applications.

Network Engineering Specialism Modules

Level 5: Network Design and Routing
This module covers comprehensive networking concepts and skills, from network applications to the protocols and services provided to those applications.

Level 5: Local Area Network Switching and Wireless Networks
In studying this module, you will learn about various Local Area Network (LAN) and Wireless LAN (WLAN) concepts including network switching, VLAN, STP, link aggregation, DHCP, security etc. Upon successful completion of the module, you should have become a skilled user who is able to design a network efficiently, can configure network devices e.g. switches, WLAN router etc., can manage and troubleshoot network issues.

Level 6: Enterprise Network Concepts and Automation
In studying this module, you will learn about various Enterprise Network concepts e.g. Wide Area Network (WAN),virtualisation e.g. Cloud Computing, routing, network security, NAT, ACL, VPN, QoS. Upon successful completion of the module, you should have become a skilled user who is able to design a network efficiently, can configure network devices e.g. routers, NAT etc., can manage and troubleshoot network issues.

Level 6: Network Security and Software Defined Networks
The purpose of this module is to provide skills and knowledge in the field of network security. Today's organizations are challenged with responding rapidly to emerging network security threats. Security personnel configure and monitor various network security threat mitigation measures, such as device hardening, intrusion prevention systems, and firewalls, to protect data assets and network systems from attack.  

IT Consultancy Specialism Modules

Level 5: Business System Design
This module introduces you to the tools and techniques used by a business analyst for modelling and innovating business processes. You will learn how to analyse different elements of an organisation and to select the most appropriate tool for a given task. In particular you will study Business Process Modelling Notation and UML modelling as well as techniques from Soft Systems Methodology (rich pictures and CATWOE).

Level 5: Requirements Elicitation for Business Improvement
This module introduces you to the processes of eliciting, defining and managing the requirements relating to a business function. Approaches to elicitation including collaboration, questioning strategies and critical thinking will be discussed and used to define, confirm and manage the requirements.

Level 6: IT Consultancy for Innovation
As an IT consultant you will be working in partnership with customers offering advice about how IT can be used to resolve business problems or better meet their business objectives. You will provide an important link between end-users and technical staff, understanding customer requirements and their expectations. This module facilitates the development of consulting skills and requires you to follow a structured consultancy process. It aims to provide you with the consulting skills required to build a compelling business case for change, present recommendations and influence action. Service process improvement is an important area of work for IT consultants as technology both drives and facilitates service innovation. As part of this module, we will look at service processes in detail. You will then be required to benchmark current service metrics, design an improved technical service process and evaluate the success (or potential success) of the improved process both in terms of return on investment and improvement to metrics such as productivity and efficiency  

Data Analyst Specialism Modules

Level 5: Business System Design
This module introduces you to the tools and techniques used by a business analyst for modelling and innovating business processes. Level 5: Introduction to Data Analysis
This module introduces you to the main concepts and ideas in the domain of Data Analytics within a context of its use in the business world. Teaching on the module will be explorative using case studies and emerging research to teach and inform on the key concepts.

You will be exposed to core data analytics concepts and models, the current technology landscape, and topical application scenarios that are using a variety of environments and datasets. Within this module we shall also discuss and consider the morals and ethics we need to use in creating a new society in the modern technological age.

Level 6: Programming for Data Analytics
Making sense of new data is vital to allow organisations to carry out business, respond to changes and take advantage of new opportunities. In this module, you will practice, using formal methods of investigation, data analysis and learn how to extract information and insights using algorithmic approaches. The module covers common programming data structures, flow controls, data input and output, and error handling. In particular, the module places emphasis on data manipulation and presentation for data analysis.  A substantial practical element is integrated into the module to enable students to use a programming language (e.g. Python) to prepare data for analysis and develop data analytical solutions.

Cyber Security Specialism Modules

Level 5: Computer Security Analysis
The module will prepare you for the cyber security industry, looking at a range of issues from Red Teaming through Blue Teaming. Conceptual information will begiven on both sides of the security coin – along with practical-based work on defensive and forensic issues.

Level 5: Network Security Analysis
In this module, you will learn about networks, and how they can be attacked by threat actors in the wild. You will learn how network defends utilise a range of pre and post incident tools and procedures to prevent, and detect, network-based attacks.

Level 6: Ethical Hacking
On this module you will study computer systems and network infrastructure as an attractive target to attackers. Hackers often manipulate software vulnerabilities and poor configuration to successfully gain access and steal information. To secure a system it is essential for computer security professionals to understand the structure, configuration, tools and techniques that hackers rely upon to successfully commit their act. It is also important to test the network regularly and discover any vulnerability due to miss configuration or poor patching.

Level 6: Malware Analysis
The module will provide you with the ability to undertake assessments of software in various forms and will allow you to determine software from malware. You will be provided with an in-depth understanding of the various forms of malware, and how this is used to infect machines and hide from defenders.

Business Systems Analyst Specialism Modules

Level 5: Business System Design

Level 6: Business Improvements and Change Management
This module focuses on tools and techniques to help organisations to achieve their strategic goals by understanding their strengths, weaknesses and capabilities and using them to improve their policies, processes, and information systems. From this strategic analysis, it presents a change management plan to support system/ company change considering measures in terms of quality and value. Stakeholder requirements will be explored as a way of providing competitive advantage. As a result of these two outputs a critical reflection of the Change Management/Project Management tools and technique will consider their implication in recognising, shaping, planning, and implementing change. Focus will also begiven to the student’s skills and experience associated with the participant within this module.  

Specialism details

The primary role of a network engineer is to lead in the planning, design , installation, maintenance and support of communication networks within an organisation or between organisations. They take a proactive and agile approach to maintain high levels of network performance and availability for their users, such as staff, clients, customers and suppliers. They understand network configuration, cloud, network administration and monitoring tools, and give technical advice and guidance to their users. As part of their role they analyse system requirements to ensure the network and its services operate to desired levels with security at the heart of everything they do. They understand data traffic and transmission across the network and have a major role to play in ensuring network security and resilience. They are the key problem solver when networks fail and respond with resilience under pressure.
